Akash Madhwal is a rising star in the Indian cricket scene. He is a right-arm medium-fast bowler who plays for Uttarakhand in domestic cricket and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has impressed everyone with his ability to bowl accurate yorkers and swing the ball both ways.
Madhwal was born on 25 November 1993 in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. He completed his schooling from Roorkee Public Senior Secondary School and then pursued a degree in civil engineering. He was not a professional cricketer until four years ago, when he started playing red ball cricket for Uttarakhand. Before that, he used to play tennis ball cricket as a hobby.
He made his debut in all three formats of the game in 2019-20 season. He played his first Twenty20 match on 8 November 2019 against Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He played his first first-class match on 25 December 2019 against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy. He played his first List A match on 21 February 2021 against Meghalaya in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He came into the limelight in IPL 2023, when he was picked by Mumbai Indians for a base price of INR 20 lakh. He proved to be a valuable addition to the team, especially in the absence of their star bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. He took 18 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 23.15 and an economy rate of 7.73. His best performance came in the eliminator match against Lucknow Super Giants, when he took five wickets for just five runs in four overs and helped Mumbai Indians win by 81 runs.
Madhwal is a humble and hardworking cricketer who credits his success to his coaches and teammates. He says he mainly practices yorkers and tries to execute them under pressure.
